WHO ME? COULDN'T BE!

TODAY’S READING: Judges 6,7; Ps. 52; 1 Cor. 14

Scripture

Judges 6:11-16 The angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. [12] When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, "The LORD is with you, mighty warrior."
[13] "Pardon me, my lord," Gideon replied, "but if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, 'Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?' But now the LORD has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian."
[14] The LORD turned to him and said, "Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?"
[15] "Pardon me, my lord," Gideon replied, "but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family."
[16] The LORD answered, "I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites together."

Observation

Jesus shows up [angel of the LORD] and personally I think he is teasing Gideon when He says, "The LORD is with you, mighty warrior". Gideon is hiding out in a winepress threshing wheat. Wheat normally would get threshed right where it was cut. But in those days, that was a good way to get killed, So Gideon is hiding out. But Gideon knowing he is being teased doesn't miss a beat, a comes back with a quick come back: "Pardon me, my lord," Gideon replied, "but if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, 'Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?' But now the LORD has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian."
The comeback endured Gideon to Jesus and Jesus tells him, "Ok, I was having a little fun with you, but I like you, go and kick some butt. Then Gideon, gets honest with Jesus, I'm the weakest and the least in my family. And Jesus with a huge smile, just answers, "I will be with you."

Application

Just like Jesus showed up in the busyness of Gideon's life, I believe He shows up in ours.
Challenging us to do more and reminding us, "I will be with you." That's all I need to hear - what's the challenge, LORD?

Prayer

Jesus,
I love that you aren't always holier than thou, that at times you enjoy being, "one of the boy" and kidding around. But what I love the most is that You never forget Your God, and rather than being condemning, You are always encouraging, "I will be with you" - will get me through today.
